What Would Cities Look Like if They Were Designed by Mothers?
In her article “What Would Cities Look Like if They Were Designed by Mothers?” Christine Murray, the founder of the “Women in Architecture Awards”, states that city appearance can mostly depend on three main factors: gender, age category and personal diversity, proving that the majority of architects is young and prosperous males. For instance, she marked the lack of female qualified architects in the UK based on statistics and different researches. That is why Christine suggests to imagine, how city designs would differ depending on needs of different categories of citizens.
There are three main categories chosen for the analysis: mothers, pensioners, and teenagers. According to mothers’ and pensioners’ needs, cities should provide so-called ‘accessible environment and reasonable accommodation’, such as ramps, seat places, public facilities, etc. Architects should take into account city convenience not only for usual citizens or disabled, but think wider about other categories of people; for example, mothers with children under three.
What about teenagers’ point of view? Still, friendly environment is the most prominent topic. Availability of phone chargers, street activities zones and financial availability in eating out places are crucial for best city appearance and its organization. Moreover, this is likely that teenagers’ design concerns even psychological aspect, ‘banning advertisements with beautiful people without any imperfections’.
However, all the adjustments proposed by Christine do not mean to point out the idea of the poor city development and absence of well-designed places in the UK. Still, these areas exist and Christine shares her favorite one with her readers, proving this point is right.
1) How would you change your city appearance?
2) Do you agree with Christine's point of view?
3) What factors are important for you to be taken into account thinking about city appearance?
Yulia,
ОтветитьУдалитьthanks for your work. Both the choice of article and the way you summarised it are rather good. You managed to single out the main points and explained in enough detail what they are as well what kind of supprt to them is given. What you need to improve is how you organise it. I'd advise you to use the template I've shared with you https://bit.ly/2z71cKp
And one more thing: you need to follow reference layout rules. The following information is necessary to include:
The basics of a Reference List entry for a journal article:
Author or authors. The surname is followed by first initials.
Year of publication of the article.
Article title (in single inverted commas).
Journal title (in italics).
Volume of journal.
Issue number of journal.
