Semester task: for and against essay.
Last week, Alabama governor - Kay Ivy - signed a law that was passed by local legislature which would completely ban any abortion on the state, except the cases when it is necessary to save the mother's life. Abortion would be prohibited even if the pregnancy occurred in the case of rape or incest. Doctors who break the law would be sentenced to 99 years of prison. At the same time, women who break the law will not be prosecuted. The law is planned to come into force in six months. Democratic leaders reacted with outrage, and pledged to fight for abortion rights. The signing of this law can be considered both positively and negatively.

First of all, abortion is immoral and cheapens the value of human life. Everyone has his or her right to life. Abortion is the murder of an unborn child. The legalization of abortion promotes murder and gives irresponsible people an opportunity to kill a human life.
Moreover, abortions can actually cause women mental and physical health issues. Having an abortion today may cause certain complications which make it difficult to have a baby tomorrow.
However, the abortion ban can have many negative consequences. Firstly, in case the new law of Alabama comes into force, women will have to resort to extreme means, such as unsafe abortions. The burden of so-called unnecessary deaths will lay on poor women, mostly African - American ones, while the maternal mortality rate in Alabama is already one of the highest in the United States. Besides, the state will increase the level of child mortality which is already high. Poor women will be forced to rely on a poorly performed abortions that put their lives in danger.
The professor of The University of New York at Buffalo - Eli Gretchen - a specialist in social affairs and reproductive health, called the new law an attack on the rights of American women and transgender people who can also get pregnant. "This will mean that they will have only the following choices - to have unwanted pregnancies and children, to attempt illegal or unsafe abortions in their places of residence, or to try to get special drugs to perform abortions at home without medical supervision. There is a convincing scientific picture showing that restricting abortion does not reduce the number of it, but increases the rick of unsafe, self-performed abortions," she concluded.
In addition, abortion ban deprives women of the right and freedom of choice.
To sum up, in the US, the question of whether abortion should be allowed is politically motivated, opponents and supporters of abortion are campaigning powerfully in society, and politicians ' positions on the issue seriously affect their prospects for election. Any law can have both positive and negative influence on society, but it should not limit human rights and limits.
